Calories Burned Elliptical

The elliptical delivers running-adjacent calorie burn with almost no impact, which is exactly why it's the most crowded machine in most gyms. The trap is momentum: it's easy to let the flywheel do the work and burn far less than the console claims.

Elliptical calorie burn by intensity

Estimates use the formula kcal = MET × weight (kg) × hours, with MET values from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities. Figures are gross burn — they include the calories you would have burned at rest.

IntensityMETkcal / 30 min*kcal / 60 min*
Moderate effort5.0175350
Vigorous effort with resistance7.0245490

Burn by body weight

At a typical intensity for elliptical (7.0 METs), here's how the burn scales with body weight:

Frequently asked questions

Does the elliptical burn as many calories as running?

At genuinely matched effort it comes close, usually 10–15% below running. Most casual elliptical sessions, though, are done at much lower intensity than people realise.

Why does my elliptical say I burned 800 calories?

Console estimates often ignore body weight or use generous formulas. An honest hour of moderate elliptical work for an average adult is closer to 350–500 kcal.
